The Performance Analysis on Data ONTAP (NA-PAD) course provides you with the knowledge and skills to perform data collection and analysis on NetApp® storage systems. You will learn how to interpret data and apply performance changes based on their analysis. This course also covers using analysis data for tuning and monitoring performance.

Upon completion of this course, students are able to:

  • Recognize performance terminology and basic methodology
  • Use known methods and tools to collect performance data
  • Describe the Data ONTAP architecture and the benefits of features such as NVRAM and the WAFL® (Write Anywhere File Layout) file system
  • Use knowledge about how data flows through the network and protocol layers of Data ONTAP to monitor and analyze storage system performance
  • Examine command output from case studies to identify performance bottlenecks
  • Perform basic software configuration and recognize diagnostic operations for the Performance Acceleration Module and FlexScale
  • Use FlexCache™ to improve NFSv2 and NFSv3 read performance
  • Use the reallocate command to measure volume or file layout and optimize the layout when appropriate
  • Implement configuration for best practices for resiliency and performance
  • Identify where to find further information

Course Outline

Module 1 Performance Overview

  • Define performance terminology
  • List three major components of a storage system Use hardware status and configuration commands to determine the hardware on a storage system and its configuration
  • Define baseline performance guidelines and methodology as they relate to NetApp storage systems

Module 2 Performance Monitoring and Analysis Tools

  • Use NetApp tools for performance measurement (data collection, monitoring, and analysis)
  • Identify storage system and host-side monitoring tools Use the perfstat script to collect data and perfviewer to read perfstat output

Module 3 Performance Data Collection Commands

  • Use Data ONTAP tools to identify networking, disk I/O,
  • FC loop saturation, and CPU bottlenecks sysstat
  • statit stats wafl_susp

Module 4 Performance Monitoring and Analysis: Bottlenecks

  • Define a bottleneck Identify typical bottlenecks
  • Use case studies to identify bottleneck areas and implement improvements

Module 5 Performance Acceleration

This course is intended for administrators and support personnel who administrate NetApp storage systems running Data ONTAP 7.3 and who wish to have a deeper understanding of the system performance.

Prior to taking this course, it is recommended that students have attended

  • Data ONTAP 7-Mode Administration (D7ADM); OR
  • They have equivalent knowledge/ experience
